RSR - Chaplaincy Support Workers: Portsmouth Area
Bobby Tait - CSW, Activity Worker
HMS SULTAN
HMS SULTAN, the busy and important RN Training establishment in Gosport, is where many young men and women come to learn trades and the technical skills needed by today's naval service. Training is rigorous and consuming and it is good to be able to enjoy a break for recreation when time allows. This is where the 'Grapevine Project' and RSR play their part.
The Grapevine project, which arranges outdoor and indoor activities, has been part of the Chaplaincy department for a number of years. Rod Smith, a Methodist lay worker, has been working with the project which allows Christians to support and be alongside the young trainees. The work has been very successful but also the workload has increased and, to help, RSR has recently appointed a new RSR support worker called Robert (Bobby) Tait as an 'activities worker'.
Bobby, from Greenock in Scotland, is well qualified for the work and comes to RSR with a multi-skilled background, which includes forestry, the study of theology and discipleship. He has also just spent the last four years working in Southampton and a year running a youth group in Perth, Australia.
Sport has always played a big part in his life and we look forward to hearing news of how he gets on with this new area of work, organising the outdoor adventure activities, building relationships and getting to know and support the young men and women at HMS SULTAN. We pray that Robert's work will be blessed.
