RSR - Chaplaincy Support Workers with the Royal Marines

Dorothy Clark - CSW at CTCRMDorothy Clark is a Chaplaincy Support Worker, at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM). Dorothy takes up the story in her own words.

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who in various ways have given me such a warm welcome to my appointment as a CSW with the Royal Marines and their families at Lympstone.

When I arrived back in the Lympstone area a year ago, albeit working in another capacity, my childhood memories came flooding back. My Father had been an Army Band Sergeant and frequently reminisced about "The Regiment" which also encompassed many other members of my family. Hearing the Royal Marines Band strike up thrills me each time, it must be in my blood!
My own working career as a secretary began in the City of London and continued in various forms when I moved to the Westcountry during my early twenties. My much prayed for children made a late appearance, now aged 24, 23 and 20, and for many years, until they departed for further education, I remained at home involving myself with family our Church and work within the Community. It was in search of financial self-support following my marriage break-up that I found myself at CTCRM.

When I first heard about the work of Chaplaincy Support Workers, or CSW's, I couldn't help but reflect and relate the needs at Lympstone to my involvement's within my Church; Youth Groups, Sunday School and serving as a Deacon. The needs of the Royal Marines are different and in many ways unique but the application is the same as far as I'm concerned; listening with compassion and serving with friendship in God's name.
I remember thinking how I would love to become involved with support to the Recruits, Marines and their families but at that time couldn't see even a remote possibility. Fortunately there was One who did! When I was told there was an opportunity and made my first approach I was so excited, but I have to say more than a little apprehensive at beginning a new 'career'.
My children were my greatest encouragers and said "It's you Mum, go for it!" So I did! I know that with every job there are ups and downs, particularly coming to grips with the Computer in the workplace! ! I know there will be many challenges but I also see the joy in bringing Jesus to these men and their families in a practical sense. I really feel that God has placed me here and it is with His help and your prayerful support that I will give of my best and continue to be excited at doing His work here in Lympstone.
